Story

It was the year 2080 and space travel had become a regular occurrence. Technology had advanced greatly and the idea of a colony on mars was slowly becoming a reality. With artificial intelligence and robotics operating at near sentient levels of intelligence and inhuman levels of efficiency, building the necessary infrastructure to support life on mars was both possible and highly automated.
However, the building process still needed builders. Blue-collar workers were not extinct as their great skills, human perspective and peculiar ingenuity were still in demand. Unfortunately, the demand for their skills was shrinking and some even believed that in the coming years, blue-collar jobs would be no more.
Nevertheless, for now, even on mars, the services of blue-collar workers were required to help in the building of the colony on Mars. And so it was, that three men found themselves on a spaceship heading for mars, after being handpicked by the corporation tasked with building the very first colony in space. There were a lot of people on the spaceship, stemming from different works of life. However, these three blue-collar workers found within themselves a strong sense of comradeship, and over the course of the trip became very close friends.
The first member of the group was Arnold, an electric engineer who upskilled to be a robot expert. He worked with robots every day and he was very familiar with their abilities, limitations, and advancement. This made him the authority during most conversations about the future of building and how blue-collar workers fit into it if they fit in at all.
The second member of the small ragtag group was Amy, she used to be a mechanic and in a lot of ways, she still was. However, with the changes in technology, she had also had to adapt her skills to meet up with the changes in mechanical engineering that seemed to crop up every day. Diesel and gas-fueled engines were quickly growing extinct as more efficient means sources of energy were growing in popularity.
The last but in no way the least member of the crew was Cade. He was a plumber and for the most part, he remained a plumber. Unlike his friends, he didn’t want to change what he was or how he did things. Luckily for him, he didn’t need to. Although robots had become very advanced over the years, very few models could work efficiently in close proximity with water, and the models that could work well with water were extremely expensive. Therefore, it was cheaper to hire a plumber than use a robot for plumbing work.
One beautiful hour on the spaceship, the trio gathered together in the cafeteria and soon started talking about something they had talked about countless times before. It was their most recurrent debate and it seemed that no matter how hard they tried they couldn’t reach a lasting conclusion. The debate was about their future and how they would keep their jobs. The number of workers been replaced by robots and artificial intelligence was growing every year. They had seen a lot of their friends get fired and they knew that given the trajectory of things they too might lose their jobs in the near future.
“You know, I have been thinking,” Cade the plumber started with a frown on his face. “I think we should form a union. Together, we can force the corporations to give us our jobs back.”
“Those who try to stand in the way of technology always get crushed in the long run,” Arnold said calmly. “The robots are stronger, faster, and more efficient.”
“But they are not human and they can never be human,” Amy said.
“Exactly, Cade agreed emphatically. They are not human and they shouldn’t be doing the jobs meant for us. We need to force the corporations to stop hiring them and stick with the normal way of things.”
“I think you two are missing the point,? Arnold replied. “In the past many people have stood in the way of technology, refusing to take advantage of it, ignoring it, or fighting against it. And history has shown us that those people have regretted it in the long run.”
“Of course that’s what you would say you, traitor,” Cade said spitefully. “How does it feel to be working with the people who are hell-bent on taking food out of the mouths of your friends and former colleagues?”
“Alright, we are all friends here,” Amy said raising her hands in peace. “Let’s not say harsh things to each other.”
“I understand your pain Cade,” Arnold said reasonably. “But perhaps, we can approach this discussion from a logical point of view. Whether we like it or not the robots are here to stay. They would keep getting better and they would keep taking the jobs of those who fail to adapt and keep up with the times.”
“Adapting is a shorter fix like putting tape on a leak,” Cade said. “In the long run, we would all be out of jobs.”
“That is not true,” Amy protested. “There is no substitute for human intelligence and ingenuity.”
“Be that as it may,” Arnold said. “We still need to adapt and beyond adapting and improving our skills, we must also adapt and improve in terms of how we save, invest, and spend our money.”
“There he goes again about all that talk of blockchain technology,” Cade said with scorn and dismissal.
“Yes. And as usual, we don’t want to hear about it,” Arnold said. “Things are changing Cade, and those who adopt new technology and adapt to it, usually reap the benefits. The days of government-owned currency are over. The future is here. Those in the past who bought into this new currency when it was just starting off are billionaires today. The value of the government-owned currency is reducing every day. The window of opportunity has reduced but it is still wide enough for us to slip in and secure our future.”
“I think Arnold has a point,” Amy said.
“No he doesn’t,” Arnold replied in anger as he sprung to his feet. “I would not be a part of schemes to gain wealth through dubious means. Money is earned by a honest day’s work anything else is devious. With that, he walked away from his friends leaving them to continue the conversation without him.
Arnold and Amy discussed the opportunities available before them and as soon as they had the chance they invested a sizable proportion of their savings in their future, aligning their interests with the interest of technology and setting themselves up for long-term security.
As you might have guessed, Cade decided to remain stagnant and at the end of the day, like most people in history who stood against technology rather than align with it, Cade came to regret his stand and decision.
Amy and Arnold are on their mission to building the future now. Join them and gain the benefits of the future rather than stand against it.
